Effective September 2025: Two-Page Federal Resume Limit
All federal resumes submitted via USAJOBS must be two pages or less. The system will now actively prevent the upload of documents longer than two pages. This means your old 5+ page resume is no longer viable.
1. The “Must-Have” Data
Because space is limited, your resume must be lean and efficient. Ensure you include these mandatory fields for every job entry:
- Official Job Details: Title, Series, and Grade (for current/former federal employees).
- Employer Info: Name and location of your employer.
- Timeline: Start and end dates (Month/Year).
- Workload: Hours worked per week (Must state “40 hours/week” to prove “Specialized Experience”).
- Contact Info: Name, email, and phone number at the very top.
2. Strategic Editing (The 2-Page Strategy)
Since you are capped at two pages, you must prioritize quality over quantity:
- Tailor for Keywords: Scan the “Requirements” section of the job announcement. If it says you need “Cybersecurity policy compliance,” use that exact phrase. Do not paraphrase.
- Highlight the “STAR” Impact: Use short, punchy bullets: “Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y] by doing [Z].”
- Cut the Fluff: Remove outdated or irrelevant work experience that does not demonstrate your qualification for the specific role you are applying for.
- Prioritize the Top Quarter: Hiring managers scan the first page in 10–15 seconds. Ensure your most relevant skills and certifications are clearly visible in the top 25% of your first page.
3. What to Exclude (Stay Safe)
To avoid disqualification or security issues, NEVER include:
- Sensitive Info: No SSN, age, religious affiliation, or photos.
- Classified Data: Absolutely no government-sensitive or classified project details.
- Digital Signatures: Do not use encrypted or digitally signed documents.
4. Technical Specifications
- File Size: 5MB or less.
- Format: PDF is recommended to preserve your layout.
- Readability: Use a clean, sans-serif font (like Arial, Calibri, or Roboto). Keep margins at 0.5 inches. Use 14pt for titles and 10pt for body text to ensure you fit the page limit without sacrificing readability.
Finally, have someone else, with a good eye for detail, review your resume.
